Baptism is a ceremony performed by Christians. It is a symbolic cleansing.

For Christians, the person being baptised becomes a follower of Jesus. It also represents that the person is joining the Christian family.

Some Catholic and Anglican churches baptise babies to make them members of the church. This is known as Christening.

Other churches wait until a person is older. Then, a person can choose to be baptised when they are ready to declare their faith in Christ.
