Halal is an Arabic word meaning ‘allowed’ or ‘permissible’. It refers to anything that is accepted or allowed by the Qur’an, Hadith, and Islamic law.

The opposite of halal is haram (forbidden). Haram refers to anything that is forbidden in the Qur’an or Hadith.

The term “halal” is especially associated with Islamic dietary laws. In particular, halal is associated with meat that is processed and prepared according to Islamic law. In history and today, Muslims follow a diverse range of eating practices.

A halal lifestyle can also include things like travel, finance, clothing, media, recreation, and more in line with Islamic law.
