A mihrab is a carved out space in the wall of a mosque. This space shows the qibla, meaning the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. Muslims must face this direction when praying. The wall in which a mihrab appears is thus the “qibla wall”.
The mihrab is a focal point of the mosque. They are often beautifully decorated with designs or quotations from the Qur’an. To the right of the mihrab is the minbar. The minbar is a platform where the imam stands to address the congregation.
